They made a complete Nativity Scene and ceramic Christmas Trees for each of the kids just to mention a few of the wonderful gifts they made. They went to class once a week and their kids and grandkids were the beneficiaries of their work. Whenever she went to Laughlin, there was always a stop at the “Watchman” in the Riverside Hotel and she rarely came out of the store empty handed.Īfter George and Marie retired, they took up painting ceramics. Whenever she went out, you would always see her with matching necklace, earrings and bracelet. She loved her jewelry and had quite the collection. I think she had more clothes and shoes than all of her girls. You could not go into Marie’s house without seeing some kind of craft or jigsaw puzzle on the table. She loved to knit, crochet, do needlepoint and cross-stitch, some of which are also displayed to this day. Some of those paintings are displayed to this day. She painted ocean scenes, landscapes and Marie did a number of paintings with specific family members in mind. She enjoyed oil painting and was pretty good at that. Marie sang in the church choir and then joined the Westminster Choral. One winter she made each of them coats with wool that her Aunt Kathleen had brought from Ireland. When the girls were very young, she sewed the majority of their clothes. She pursued her different talents at different times in her life. She just needed someone by her side to give her a little support. There was even the occasional “Beach Party” bonfire and barbeque.Įven after Marie had her stroke, she still wanted to go in the waves. When her kids had kids of their own, you could find Marie jumping the waves with her grandkids. Marie did not just go to the beach to sit on the sand, she loved going in the ocean and jumping the waves. When they lived Pacoima, she used to take the girls to Hansen Dam to play in the water.Īfter they moved to, Orange County, most Saturdays during the summer meant a trip to the beach – after the household chores were completed of course. There are pictures of her as a young adult on the beach in Catalina. Maries’s love of the beach was evident through her life. During this time, Marie worked as an office manager and basically ran Briteway, a janitorial supply company and was there for 17 years. There was one more move a few years later to Garden Grove and that is where George and Marie lived until they retired. And then along came Brian! Brian was born on Colleen’s 14th birthday. Marie worked for Sears at a catalog store for a few years. Tina was the family favorite pet.Ībout nine years later they moved to Westminster. That dog was bigger than the boys! When the boys were teenagers, they had a German Shepard named Tina. Some years later, Marie brought home a St. As a result, the family got their first dog, Taffy. When a new litter came along, Marie would care for the puppies while Carol worked. She also helped a neighbor that raised Collies. Marie sold toys and then jewelry through home parties. Now he worked close to home and could be at home more – and they all got to go to Disneyland a lot !! This is where they were living when Ken was born. George was working at the camera shop in Disneyland then and had been commuting from the valley. That is where they lived when the girls, Kristine, Maureen and Colleen were born. George and Marie bought their first house in Pacoima. ![]() George and Marie were married for 63 years. They dated for a year then married in 1949. They were introduced to each other by a friend of George’s. That was just one of her many creative endeavors. After high school, she went to design school and did an internship in costume design at the studios. Marie attended high school at Marymount High School in Los Angeles, an all-girls catholic boarding school. ![]() Marie’s father had immigrated from Sweden and her mother from Ireland.
